What to submit with your planning application - national and local validation requirements

You need to submit the correct application form, plans and supporting documents with a planning application before the local planning authority can start to formally consider it.

The information required to make a valid application consists of mandatory national information and local information requirements.

National information requirements

The national requirements are set out in planning legislation and national planning practice guidance.

These are set out on the national information requirements page.

Local information requirements

Local information requirements which are set by the local planning authority are based on national and adopted local policy requirements and constraints known as ‘policy drivers’.

Not all of the local information requirements will apply to every planning application. The information required will dependent upon the nature, scale and location of the proposed development. The Council will only ask for what is required to determine the application.

The Bradford Local Validation List provides guidance on the level and type of information required to be submitted as part of a planning application. The aim is to provide clarity and ensure consistency for those submitting planning applications.

When we receive your application, it will go through a validation process to check that all the appropriate information has been provided. Failure to provide all of the requisite national and local requirements will result in the application being invalid and it will not be processed until this information is submitted.

Where an application is considered to be invalid, we will write to explain what information is required and indicate a time period within which this must be provided. In the case of a dispute over validation requirements then the applicant’s attention is drawn to Article 10A and 29 of the DMPO.

Validation checklists

We have created a series of validation checklists that set out the national and local information requirements for the following types of application.
