Business volunteers paint community centre mural

Creative volunteers from Emerald Publishing Ltd have painted an eye-catching mural on Keighley’s Hainworth Wood Community Centre, as well as giving the interior a fresh coat of paint.

Around 30 members of staff from the Leeds company recently gave up their time to spend a volunteering day at the centre.

Hainworth Wood Community Centre has been undergoing a transformation, since it was saved from closure when its roof collapsed following high winds in March 2021.

Ward councillors and local volunteers pulled together to save the centre, clean up and repair damage, with some funding help from Bradford Council and support from Keighley Area Co-ordinator’s Office.

The centre is now thriving, providing a wide range of activities for the local community, including a parent toddler group, parenting and maternity classes, IT training, job clubs and a luncheon club for the elderly.

Keighley East Ward Councillor Lisa Robinson, who supports the centre, said: "We were overwhelmed to have been chosen by Emerald Publishing Ltd, for their staff volunteer day, it has made a massive difference inside and outside and supports the journey that the centre is on growing from strength to strength."

Vicky Williams, CEO of Emerald Publishing Ltd, said: “We were delighted to be able to support Hainworth Wood Community Centre this year. The work they’ve done to transform the centre over the last few years is inspiring, and it was great to be able to play a small part in that. We do group volunteering events every year, and were pleased to be able to support three organisations in Keighley this year – alongside Hainworth, we also did some work for the Keighley Women’s and Children’s Association and Woodville Community Centre. Community support is vital in ensuring we don’t lose these much-needed resources for those that need them.”
