Sickness absence

If members of staff feel work is affecting their health or a health problem is affecting their work they should discuss this with their line manager and human resources who can assist and support and where appropriate make a referral to the Employee Health and Wellbeing Service.

Health surveillance

The Employee Health and Wellbeing Service undertakes health surveillance as a means of monitoring and assessing individuals undertaking work known to carry health risks.

The health surveillance required varies dependant on the risks concerned. It can range from maintaining a record of an individual's exposure updated at regular intervals or biological monitoring such as lung function measurements. It may include ensuring that relevant immunisations are up to date.

Health Surveillance can include

  • Skin Assessments
  • HAVS (Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome) Assessments
  • Lung Function Testing
  • Immunisations

New starter health assessment

Following a job offer, some roles require specific medical assessments. The screening of some individuals is carried out to ensure that existing health concerns are not likely to be exacerbated by their work.

Workplace assessment

Employees should undertake the DSE self assessment available on the Occupational Safety web pages. Any issues raised should be discussed with management in the first instance. Employee Health and Wellbeing work with Occupational Safety and external agencies, in the assessment of the working environment to promote compliance with relevant aspects of health and safety legislation. Assessment may be carried out to assist with adjustments that are specific to an individual's health needs.

Return to work and rehabilitation

We offer advice on phased return to work or rehabilitation on suitable work of those temporarily or permanently disabled by illness or injury. The Occupational Health emphasis is on modifying the work situation where appropriate to enable individuals to undertake the work required.

Resolutions and mediation

The Employee Health and Wellbeing unit has a Resolutions Coordinator who provides mediation and facilitates developing individual stress management action plans.

Health education and promotion

The Employee Health and Wellbeing Service provides advice as part of the ill health review and can guide and advise individuals as to where they can obtain information to assist in their personal health and fitness.

By looking after yourself you can feel fitter and look better and you will be protecting yourself against heart disease, stroke and cancer. Employees who wish to make healthy lifestyle changes will find a host of information on the NHS Change for Life website. Support with lifestyle changes can be found on that NHS Health Trainers website. The Employee Health and Wellbeing Service also includes a Health Trainer. Please contact the department if you would like more information.

Immunisations

Employee Health and Wellbeing offer immunisation against certain infectious diseases such as Hepatitis B. Vaccination should be offered according to risk in post following a risk assessment by the employees' line manager. The Department of Health recommend vaccination of certain occupational groups for further information see the guidance for managers under the guidance tab.
