Article 4 Directions

What is an Article 4 Direction?

Article 4 directions are made by the Council and withdraw specified permitted development rights across a defined area in order to control works that could threaten the character of an area of acknowledged importance. They are most common in conservation areas. 

This will mean that you have to submit a planning application for work which normally does not need one.

Saltaire Article 4 Direction

The Saltaire Article 4 Direction was made on 21 December 1976. It removed permitted development rights for external alterations and extensions (including porches) to residential properties within the defined area.  

All of the properties within the defined area became listed buildings in 1984. This means that they now have a greater degree of protection which supersedes the controls in the Article 4 Direction, as listed building consent is required for all alterations and extensions to the properties.  

Apsley Crescent Article 4 Direction

This Order removes permitted development rights for the construction of dormer windows on residential properties and the painting of the exterior of any building within the defined area.

Little Horton (Dormer Windows) Article 4 Direction

The Little Horton (Dormer Windows) Article 4 Direction was made on 2 July 1985.

This Order removes permitted development rights for the construction of dormer windows on residential properties within the defined area.

Little Horton (Stone Painting) Article 4 Direction

The Little Horton (Stone Painting) Article 4 Direction was made on 2 July 1985. 

This Order removes permitted development rights for the painting of the exterior of any building within the defined area.

Manningham (Dormer Windows) Article 4 Direction

The Manningham (Dormer Windows) Article 4 Direction was made on 2 July 1985.

This Order removes permitted development rights for the construction of dormer windows on residential properties within the defined area.

Manningham (Stone Painting) Article 4 Direction

The Manningham (Stone Painting) Article 4 Direction was made on 2 July 1985. 

This Order removes permitted development rights for the painting of the exterior of any building within the defined area.
