Grey bin - recycling only
Yes
- Paper: newspapers, magazines, office paper, envelopes, junk mail, catalogues
- Cardboard, including cereal boxes and shredded paper in small boxes
- Metal: food cans, drinks cans, aerosol cans, aluminium foil
- Glass: bottles and jars, including aftershave and perfume bottles
- Plastic: bottles, food trays (but not black food trays), yoghurt pots, margarine/butter tubs
- Cartons: food and drinks cartons (for example, Tetrapak)
No
- Black plastic food trays
- Plastic plant pots and seed trays
- Plastic bags, bin bags, crisp packets, cellophane, cling film, bubble wrap
- Polystyrene or foam takeaway cups, food trays and packaging
- Waxed or coated cardboard takeaway drink cups
- Mirrors or sheets of glass - these can be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre
- Pyrex jugs or dishes made from toughened glass
- Paint tins or oil cans - these can be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre
- Wallpaper
- Plastic toys or kitchenware such as kettles and washing up bowls
- Greetings cards with glitter, foil or beads
- Toothpaste tubes (plastic) can now be taken to some Boots stores and recycled there – check which stores are taking part here
- Other items such as needles, colostomy bags, incontinence pads, nappies, dog poo, food waste, garden waste, car parts, car batteries, bricks, wood, carpets, textiles, electrical items including cookers, dryers, vacuum cleaners, gas bottles or hazardous waste
Remember
- Rinse containers before recycling
- Labels can stay on
- Lids can be left on plastic bottles but squash the bottle first
- All recyclables go in the same bin – no need to separate
- You must put the right thing in the right bin, contaminated bins will not be emptied
- Bins should have the lid closed with no waste at the side
- The Domestic Waste and Recycling Policy will be enforced
Green bin for general waste
Yes
- Nappies

No
- Garden waste. For a small fee we can collect your garden waste or you can take it to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre or you could make your own compost.
- Gas bottles or cylinders. They may explode if they are crushed in the collection vehicle. They cannot be accepted at our Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) and must be returned to the supplier to be refilled, recycled or disposed of appropriately.
- Needles and syringes. Return these to the provider or one of the Household Waste Recycling Centres.
- Batteries. These can be taken to any retail outlet that sells batteries or one of the Household Waste Recycling Centres.
- Electrical items. These can be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre. If you are unable to transport large electrical items you can book an electrical waste collection.
- Tyres. These can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centres at Bowling Back Lane or Royd Ings Keighley. A fee of £6.50 excluding VAT will be charged per tyre.

Brown bin - garden waste
Yes
- Grass cuttings, leaves, hedge clippings
- Twigs and small branches, cut into small pieces
- Garden plants and weeds

- Soil, rubble, stones
- Plant pots, plant ties
- Glass or metal
- Food including fruit and vegetable peelings
- Dog and cat poo, pet bedding and straw

- Annual charge applies. You can sign up to the garden waste collection service.
- You can compost at home or take garden waste to a Household Waste Recycling Centre
Blue bin
Large blue recycling bins are now used in some multi-occupancy properties where individual grey bins aren’t practical.
Bin collection information
- Alternate weekly collections: Green bin one week, grey bin the next
- Collection times: Between 6.30am and 5.15pm on your collection day.

Can I recycle black plastic trays?
No – they can’t be recycled due to the material and pigment.
Can I leave bags next to my bin?
No – only waste inside the bin will be collected. You can take any extra waste to a Household Waste Recycling Centre.
What if I live in a hard-to-reach area?
Your waste will be collected by a transit van on the same schedule.
Does the bin lid need to be closed?
Yes. This helps prevent spills, smells, pests, and accidents.
