Weed Control

Bradford Council is responsible for weed control on public land, including roads, paved footways, kerb edges, traffic islands, paved or paved sections of roundabouts, parks, and cemeteries.

• Treatments are carried out up to three times per year during the spring, summer, and autumn months.
• Once an area has been treated, it typically takes around two to three weeks for weeds to die back.
• Weeds are treated using a low-toxicity herbicide (glyphosate), which can be used safely without posing a risk to people or animals. However, weeds may reappear between scheduled treatments.
• Bradford Council is not responsible for the management of weed on unadopted roads, their paved footways, their kerb edges and / or traffic islands. The responsibility for unadopted road weed management falls to the owners of that road. Owners are the people whose property/ies face onto the unadopted road in question. For rental properties, the owner would be the landlord and not the tenant.
• If you are in doubt about whether your road is adopted or unadopted, please use our online Report Form or contact 01274 431000 and our Contact Centre officers will advise you.

Any concerns regarding weeds on public land can be reported via the Council’s online Report Form.

Grass Verges, Green Spaces and Parks

Grass verges, green spaces and parks belonging to Bradford Council are maintained as part of a scheduled grounds maintenance programme led by our Parks and Green Spaces teams.

Sites are cut on a rotational basis, typically once every three to four weeks during the growing season, with an annual expectation of approximately ten cuts per year.

We do not provide an exact schedule for mowing and maintenance because the timing of individual visits can vary depending on weather conditions, ground conditions and operational priorities across the district.

Cemeteries

Bradford Council maintains its 24 cemeteries by providing in-house and contracted green space management services at our sites. A list of Council owned is available oncemeteries webpage.

Any cemetery not listed on our website link above will be under either private or church ownership, for information about these sites, please contact the relevant landowners directly.

Private Land and Housing Association Providers

Private Landowners and Housing Association Providers are responsible for maintaining their own land in terms of weeding, mowing and general maintenance.

If you are renting/are purchasing your property with a housing association, for any issues regarding weeding and your green spaces, we advise that residents please contact their housing association office in the first instance.

Private landlords will detail their expectations for land maintenance within their contract.
