Composting

Why compost?

Composting turns your kitchen and garden waste into something useful for your garden. It helps your soil and plants to grow better.

It also helps the environment. About 40% of what we throw away at home can be composted. This means less waste goes to landfill.

How do I compost?

  1. Choose a good spot
Put your compost bin on bare soil. This helps insects get in and break down the waste.
  2. Add the right mix
Use a mix of “green” and “brown” waste:
    • Greens – soft and wet, like grass cuttings, tea bags and fruit peelings.
    • Browns – dry and tough, like twigs, paper and cardboard.
  3. Keep it moist
Your compost should feel damp, like a wrung-out sponge.
    • If it’s too dry, add water or more greens.
    • If it’s too wet, add more browns.
  4. Wait 6 to 9 months
Compost is ready when it’s dark and smells earthy. You can use it on flower beds, borders, pots or lawns.
