Apply for a discount based on your personal circumstances

Some people may not be counted when working out a Council Tax bill. If only one adult is counted, you may get a 25% discount. If no adults are counted, you may get a 50% discount.

Some homes may also get a full discount, meaning no Council Tax is paid.

Discounts and exemptions

Discount or exemption Definition How to apply
Disability - home adapted for a disabled person You may get a discount if your home has been changed to help someone with a permanent disability. Visit the home adapted for a disabled person page for more information.
Severe mental impairment People with a permanent condition that affects their mental and social abilities may be eligible for a discount. Visit the Severe Mental Impairment page for more information.
Annexes with a separate Council Tax bill If an annex is:
  • used by someone in the main home
  • lived in by a relative
Then a 50% discount may be applied to the annex.
To apply, complete the annex discount form.
People in prison People who normally live in the home but are now in prison (not for Council Tax or fines) may qualify for a reduction depending on how many other people live in the property. To apply, use the Council Tax discount form for persons detained in prison.
Carers for disabled people You may get a discount if you care for someone with a disability who is:
  • Not your spouse or partner
  • Not your own child under 18

Other people who may qualify for a reduction

Call 01274 437715 if you or someone in your home is:

  • A student’s spouse or dependant who is not a British citizen and cannot work or claim benefits
  • Under 20 and left school or college after 30 April (not counted until 1 November)
  • A member of a religious community with no income or savings
  • Aged 18 and still getting child benefit
  • A student nurse
  • Employed to provide care (for example, through an agency)
  • Staying in a hostel or night shelter
  • A member of a visiting force or international organisation
  • A diplomat or someone with diplomatic immunity
  • An apprentice earning less than £195 per week
  • A youth training trainee
