Expression of interest information for the Clean Air Schools Programme Grant Funding Scheme

Funded by the Bradford Clean Air Zone (CAZ)

Bradford Council is inviting Bradford District schools to complete the Expression of Interest form by 20 October 2023 in order to be considered for grant funding direct to schools to help them implement bespoke emission and exposure reduction measures ensuring schools become cleaner, healthier places for Bradford’s children.

The following tiers of Schools and Educational establishment are eligible to apply for funding:

  • Primary Education
  • Secondary Education

The application process will be in two stages.

Stage one

Stage one is an expression of interest.

This will enable our grants panel to view applications and invite those that meet our criteria to then submit a detailed application.

Please note that at the expression of interest stage estimated costs are satisfactory and detailed quotes are not required.

  • The window for the Expressions of Interest will be open from 20 September 2023 to 20 October 2023.
  • An initial assessment will be made on the content and strength of the Expression of Interest.
  • Grants are available for values between £250 - £10,000 per school. Joint applications can be made and use a joint funding amount, for example two schools can apply for up to £20,000 on a joint project.
  • A school can only apply once in this round of funding, this can be as an individual school or a joint project with other schools.
  • We will inform schools about the outcome of their expression of interest as soon as possible and aim to inform schools of their outcome decision no later than 1 December
  • The funding is available to all school’s district wide and will be administered through the Council’s Sustainability service.

Stage two

Stage two is a detailed application – you will be invited to submit a detailed application if the grants panel are satisfied with your expression of interest. This will be carried out on YorTender our procurement portal.

Support will be provided with this if required.

Information about projects you could consider:

Detailed below are examples of the types of things these grants will support at schools are:

  • Improved cycling and walking access
  • Relocation of seating and play areas away from
  • Ventilation and air filtration
  • Promoting and facilitating park and stride and car sharing
  • Behaviour change programmes
  • Providing bespoke information such as air quality monitoring and walking maps
  • Green infrastructure
  • EV charging and vehicle infrastructure
  • Secure cycle or scooter storage
  • Other innovations relating to ensuring schools become cleaner and healthier places for children

As part of the Clean Air Schools Programme Bradford Council may also provide the following:

  • Support to implement the project, educational resources, and quizzes for the classroom around air pollution, generic banners, and posters for use at school,
  • Environmental Wardens to work in parallel with schools to educate and enforce anti idling regulations.

The expressions of interest and grant applications will be assessed based on:

  • Potential air quality improvement
  • Reduced exposure
  • Wider benefits
  • Cost
  • Deliverability
  • Stakeholder support

When submitting the EOI it should be signed by a named officer with appropriate authority to confirm the proposals are deliverable.
