Care leavers - Council Tax exemption

From 1 April 2022, young people who were looked after by Bradford Council when they turned 18 are disregarded (not counted) for Council Tax purposes when calculating the number of adults in the household.

This means they may qualify for a discount or exemption from Council Tax until the end of the financial year in which they turn 25. This depends on who else is in the household - if all occupants are Bradford Council care leavers then an exemption may apply until the end of the financial year in which the oldest care leaver turns 25. If all but one of the occupants are Bradford Council care leavers then a discount may apply until the end of the financial year in which the oldest care leaver turns 25.

The discount or exemption applies only to care leavers supported by Bradford Council. If you were a care leaver before 1 April 2022, different rules may apply.
