The City of Bradford Permit Scheme
What is the City of Bradford Permit Scheme?
The Bradford Permit Scheme helps reduce disruption caused by roadworks. Instead of just notifying the Council, companies and organisations must apply for a permit before starting work. This means works are planned to minimise inconvenience for road users.
The scheme applies to all streets in Bradford District, except private roads.
Why do we have a permit scheme?
Roadworks affect everyone. The scheme aims to:
- reduce delays and disruption
- improve safety for road users
- coordinate works better across the district
Who needs a permit?
Anyone carrying out works on a permit street needs a permit. This includes:
- utility companies
- Bradford Council and its partners.
It does not include skips and scaffolding - these follow existing rules.
Permit fees
Fees depend on:
- the type of work (major, standard, minor, immediate)
- the road category
- whether the street is traffic-sensitive

Permit variations
- £45 for main roads and traffic-sensitive streets.
- £35 for non traffic sensitive streets.
- No fee if the change is requested by the Council.

The call will be logged and a unique reference number provided to the applicant, and this number should be included in the subsequent permit application. | Immediate activities on streets where early notification is required. | To enable the permit authority to have an input to the design and implementation of otherwise unplanned temporary traffic management on particularly sensitive parts of the network. |
If you start emergency works:
- apply for a permit within 2 hours or by 10am next working day
- contact the Council if you need road closures, portable signals or emergency traffic notices
- portable signals must be manually controlled during busy times.
These rules help keep the public informed and traffic moving.
