Rules for shop displays on public highways
- Displays must be directly outside your shop frontage so staff and customers do not cross pedestrian flow.
- Items must relate to your business and must not obstruct entrances, fire doors or emergency exits.
- Displays must:
- be against the shop frontage
- be no longer than one third of the shop width.
- Pavement must be at least 2.8 metres wide before any display is allowed.
- Do not use empty milk crates or bread baskets as stands.
- Detached displays are not allowed.
- Displays must not block visibility for pedestrians or drivers.
- No selling or trading on the pavement - all transactions must happen inside the shop.
- These rules do not apply to markets, street fetes, or lay-bys (regulated separately).
- Displays may need to be removed for:
- events
- street works
- other reasonable causes.
- You must comply with any extra requirements from the Council, Police or Emergency Services.
