Abnormal loads - movement on public highways

The City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council is responsible for most public highways in the Bradford District. Government regulations set out which vehicles (by width, length, height and weight) may use public highways. Some roads with bridges may not be suitable for all vehicles.

What is an abnormal load?

Large or heavy loads and cranes that comply with government regulations are generally referred to as abnormal loads.

Responsibilities of hauliers

• Hauliers are responsible for any problems or damage caused by abnormal load movements.
• Hauliers must notify Leeds City Council (acting for Bradford Council) in advance and indemnify the Council against any issues.
• Notification must include:
  • From and to addresses
  • Length, height, width
  • Axle weights and spacing
  • Route details
  • Nature of the load.

These details are recorded in the abnormal loads database.

Route checks

• Hauliers must survey the route before notification to ensure:
  • width and height clearances
  • no long-term roadworks.
• The Council checks for conflicts with road and bridge restrictions.
• Hauliers must also notify other bridge owners.
