Renewable energy and fuels

Emissions baseline

Energy use in domestic buildings accounts for the largest portion of the total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, at around 31%. This is mainly due to gas consumption which accounts for around 75% of emissions.

Increasing renewable energy and fuels

According to emissions and air quality experts, to meet its net zero target, Bradford will need to "switch all energy sources to renewable alternatives. A significant proportion of this will be met by the grid but it is crucial that the local authority supports the current and future energy demand through local renewable energy installations.

Some of these may be used locally, for example domestic solar panels used by households, while other, large-scale sites such as solar farms or onshore wind farms may feed into the electricity grid, supporting both Bradford specifically and the whole of the UK."

In December 2024 the Prime Minister committed his government to achieving a target of 95% "clean power" in the UK by 2030 and published the Government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan (PDF).

Bradford Council is working with partners to ensure that Bradford District is at the forefront of innovation and planning for renewable energy technology and clean fuels. Not only providing attractive investment and skilled employment opportunities, residents and businesses will have access to secure and affordable low or zero carbon sources.
