Enabling community climate action
The Climate Change Committee (PDF) estimates that around 60% of all changes required to reach net zero (nationally) by 2050 rely on societal or behavioural change.
Local communities and neighbourhood groups have a powerful role to play in supporting the district’s journey to net zero by 2038, through mitigation, physical and wellbeing adaptation measures.
Engaging, empowering and enabling communities and partner organisations to take positive climate action leads to environmental, social and economic benefits, addressing the inequalities in both the causes and consequences of climate change.
Business in the Community’s (BiTC) Community Climate Fund will help businesses and communities come together to tackle both the climate and cost-of-living crisis. While the issues may seem very different, many of the solutions to the climate crisis, such as retrofitting buildings, community food growing and energy-efficiency schemes also help to address the cost-of-living crisis by reducing household bills.
In Bradford, the fund aims to deliver at least £5m of value for climate action that creates wider social and economic benefits for communities by 2030.
As active members of the Community Climate Fund’s Steering Group, Bradford Council is joining other organisations locally in supporting the fund with project ideas, connections, publicity and advice.
