Grants to switch to fully electric vehicles

Bradford Council is offering grants to help businesses, sole traders and not-for-profit organisations switch to fully electric or other zero-emission vehicles.

These grants are available to organisations in the Bradford District that currently own an eligible heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) or light-duty vehicle (LDV).

Grant amounts

  • HDV (Heavy-Duty Vehicles): £16,000 per vehicle
  • LDV (Light-Duty Vehicles): £4,500 per vehicle

Grants are paid as a single payment once your application has been assessed and approved, and you have signed and returned the grant terms and conditions.

What the grant can be used for

The grant can help cover a range of costs associated with switching to a new or second hand zero-emission vehicle, including:

  • Lease or finance payments
  • Loan repayments
  • Electricity and charging costs
  • Charging infrastructure
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Licensing costs

Who can apply

You can apply if you are:

  • A small or medium-sized enterprise (SME)
  • A sole trader
  • A charity or not-for-profit organisation
  • A school or educational establishment

You must also:

  • Be based in the Bradford District
  • Have been operating before 1 September 2026 and continue to operate at the time of application

An SME is defined as an organisation with:

  • Fewer than 250 employees

Annual turnover of £44 million or less, or a balance sheet total of £38 million or less

Vehicle eligibility

Your current vehicle must:

  • Be a diesel or petrol vehicle (up to Euro 6 standard)
  • Be owned by you since before 1 September 2026
  • Be fully operational (with valid MOT, insurance and tax)
  • Be one of the following:
    • HDV: N2/N3 HGV or M3 bus/coach (not available for scheduled bus service vehicles)
    • LDV: N1 light goods vehicle or M2 minibus

Your replacement vehicle must:

  • Be fully electric or zero-emission (e.g. hydrogen)
  • Replace your current vehicle on a like-for-like basis (same vehicle class)
  • Be purchased or leased for at least 2 years
  • Not be bought or leased before your grant is approved

Important information

  • Funding is limited and awarded on a first come, first served basis
  • If funding runs out, eligible applicants will be placed on a waiting list
  • Businesses may be limited to a maximum of 5 applications
  • Do not purchase or lease a replacement vehicle until your grant has been approved
  • Applications for vehicles already purchased will not be accepted

Previous Clean Air Zone (CAZ) grants

If you previously received a CAZ grant, you may still be eligible:

  • If your 2-year agreement has ended, you can apply for the full grant
  • If still within the 2-year period, you may transfer any remaining obligations into a new agreement

In some cases, if grant conditions are not met, part of the funding may need to be repaid (known as “clawback”).

After being awarded a grant

To remain eligible for the grant, you must:

  • Dispose of your old non-zero emission vehicle before payment
  • Stay based in the Bradford District
  • Continue trading (or remain registered, for charities/schools)
  • Keep and use the new zero-emission vehicle for at least 2 years
  • Ensure the vehicle remains taxed, insured, and roadworthy

If conditions are not met and not resolved promptly, some or all of the grant may need to be repaid.
