Inquest openings and Court Mentions
Inquest openings
An inquest opening is a formal procedure where a coroner confirms that they will investigate a death. This process is often brief and takes no more than a few minutes. It involves the coroner confirming that a medical examination has taken place and that the body can be released to the family's chosen funeral company. The coroner also grants authority for an interim death certificate to be prepared, which is necessary for passing on to organizations such as banks and mortgage companies. The inquest opening is a crucial step in the coronial proceedings, as it ensures that the investigation is deemed active for contempt of court purposes and that the coroner has no power to discontinue the investigation once it has been opened.
Court Mentions
A court mention is a brief, procedural court hearing used to manage administrative matters and ensure a case progresses efficiently, usually conducted for cases that have been Suspended for police enquiries or Crown Court proceedings. The hearing is usually no more than a few minutes long where the Coroner will either continue the Suspension, or officially ‘Resume’ the inquest.

Inquests, PIR and other Hearings
Inquests
An inquest is a formal investigation led by a coroner to establish who the deceased was, and how, when, and where they died. It is not a trial, and no one is found guilty or blamed. The purpose is to find the facts surrounding the death. You may hear evidence from witnesses, experts, or read written statements. The process is open to the public, and the coroner will guide proceedings to ensure they are respectful and fair.
Pre-Inquest Review
A pre-inquest review (PIR) is a preparatory hearing held by a Coroner to manage and organize the inquest process before the main inquest begins. A PIR is designed to ensure that an inquest is conducted efficiently, fairly, and openly. It is particularly used in complex or contentious cases where legal or procedural issues need to be addressed before the main inquest hearing starts. In simpler cases, a PIR may not be necessary, as directions can be handled at the inquest opening or via documents alone.
