Inquest openings
An inquest opening is a formal procedure where a coroner confirms that they will investigate a death. This process is often brief and takes no more than a few minutes. It involves the coroner confirming that a medical examination has taken place and that the body can be released to the family's chosen funeral company. The coroner also grants authority for an interim death certificate to be prepared, which is necessary for passing on to organizations such as banks and mortgage companies. The inquest opening is a crucial step in the coronial proceedings, as it ensures that the investigation is deemed active for contempt of court purposes and that the coroner has no power to discontinue the investigation once it has been opened.
