LGBTQ+ History Month 2026
Bradford District will once again celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, in February, with organisations from across the district hosting a number of events.
LGBTQ+ History Month aims to bring people together to celebrate LGTBQ+ history and heritage and to help us learn from each other’s personal experiences.
This year’s theme is Science and Innovation. The five historical figures being celebrated in 2026 are:
- Barbara Burford – medical researcher who established NHS equality and diversity guidelines
- Charles Beyer – locomotive engineer and founding member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers
- Elke Mackenzie – botanist who researched lichens in Antarctica
- Jemma Redmond – biotechnologist who developed 3D bioprinters to create tissues and organs
- Robert Boyle – founder of modern chemistry and scientific method.
Events in the Bradford District
From Thursday, 29 January - Bradford LGBTQ Stories: Out Together is launching a new digital history project for LGBTQ History Month and beyond, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds to celebrate our community, reduce digital exclusion, and build meaningful connections across generations.
Participants will have the chance to learn (or share) a range of digital skills, including taking digital photos, recording video, using mapping apps, and anything else the group wants to explore. Devices will be available for anyone who needs them.
Eight free introductory sessions begin on 29 January – mornings at Bradford City Library and afternoons at Shipley Library.
Further project details will be shared soon.
If you’d like to volunteer your digital know‑how, develop your own skills, or share your story, we’d love to hear from you - Contact: [email protected]
Sunday, 1 February - Launch of LGBTQ+ History Month will see the LGBTQ+ History Month flag raised in City Park. City Hall will also be lit up in rainbow colours throughout the month of February.
