Employment opportunities and advice

Job Centre Plus

All former Service personnel have access to the full range of Jobcentre Plus services; In addition, a person who has served in the Armed Forces for any day within the last three years can be considered for early access to the new Work Programme. Service leavers on Employment and Support Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or Income Support will be able to volunteer for the Work Programme at any point in their claim.

Partners of currently serving and ex-Service personnel have access to the full range of Jobcentre Plus services and can be considered for early access to the new Work Programme from three months into their claim for Jobseeker’s Allowance.

When a Service medical board decides a severely disabled person can no longer be employed in the Armed Forces and should be discharged, DWP now uses the Service medical board evidence to determine eligibility to Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) rather than conduct a face to face medical assessment.

Regular Forces Employment Association

The Regular Forces Employment Association aims to help men and women of all ranks, leaving the Armed Forces to find and to remain in employment throughout their working lives.

This is done as part of the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) for up to two years after discharge and thereafter is done on behalf of the Service Benevolence Funds.

Remploy - Armed Forces and Veterans Service

Supporting wounded, injured and sick service leavers and disabled veterans and provides them with a range of specialist employment services at more than 60 high street branches and offices, where candidates receive one-to-one support from specially trained 'Armed Forces Champions'.

Careers Transition Partnership

Offering free resettlement services to all ranks of the UK Armed Forces, including the Navy & Royal Marines, British Army and Royal Air Force – their  aim is to help those leaving the services  make the transition to civilian life as smoothly  as possible. They provide flexible support from two years before discharge, through to two years after.

SSAFA - Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association

Provide financial, practical and emotional assistance to anyone who is currently serving or has ever served in the Army, Navy or RAF, and their families.

Work collaboratively with Versa Counselling locally to access acute counselling support and access to other mental health services when required.

Royal British Legion

Provide practical care, advice and support to serving members of the Armed Forces, veterans of all ages and their families.

Actively promote respect and understanding of the Armed Forces Community across the Civilian communities.

Raise money through donations to support the Armed Forces Community.

Support local and national events that promote a positive image of the Armed Forces.

Local RBL hold outreach drop-in sessions at:

  • City Hall, Bradford, BD1 1HY on the third Wednesday of every month from 10am to 2pm.  
  • Airedale General Hospital, Skipton Road, Keighley, BD20 6TD on the first Friday of every month from 10am to 2pm.
  • RBL also have a Pop In advice and information Centre at 73-75 Albion Street, Leeds LS1 5AA open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.

Defence Discount Services - The only official Ministry of Defence discount service

To support the Armed Forces Covenant and in recognition of the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces Community, the Defence Discount Service gives members of the Armed Forces Community discounts both online and on the high street. The Membership Card is a physical card that members of the Armed Forces Community can take into stores, restaurants and venues in order to obtain a discount.
