What is BEEP and who is it for?

Bradford Encouraging Exercise in People (BEEP) is a free physical activity referral service that encourages people who are inactive, to become more active, with a 52 week support programme.

BEEP is also a great way for people living with long term health conditions to increase their physical activity levels and improve their health.

To join the BEEP programme you need to:

  • Live in Bradford district
  • Be 16 years or older
  • Be currently inactive
  • Have a long term medical or mental health condition and/or a BMI above 25
How can I get a referral?

Ask at your local GP practice for a referral to the BEEP service. Your GP, nurse or any other health care professional can complete a referral form for you.

Booking your first consultation

BEEP consultations are held every day in GP surgeries, leisure centres and council facilities across Bradford district making it easier for everyone to find somewhere that’s local to them.

When you receive your completed referral form, call us to book your first consultation with one of our exercise referral officers on 01274 435388.
What happens at my consultation?

BEEP Team.

You will meet one of our expert exercise referral officers who will ask you questions about your health and lifestyle and take some measurements to complete a health screening assessment, these include:

  • Current physical activity levels
  • Height
  • Weight
  • BMI
  • Body fat %
  • Visceral fat %
  • Blood pressure
  • Resting heart rate
  • Wellbeing score

Your exercise referral officer will use these results to track your progress throughout the year. They will create a bespoke exercise training programme which is created specifically for you. After your consultation, you may also be offered discounted exercise options.​​​​​​​

What are the benefits of increasing physical activity?

Some of the benefits of regular physical activity are:

  • Reduced risk of heart disease and stroke
  • Better control or reduced chance of developing high blood pressure
  • Helps to control or reduce diabetes
  • Improves mobility and can help reduce pain
  • Decreases anxiety, stress and depression
  • Improves self-esteem, confidence and independence
  • Helps you to meet new friends
How much physical activity should I aim to do?

There are physical activity guidelines covering all ages published by the UK Chief Medical Officer. These guidelines focus on being active every day and give the recommended minimum levels of activity for each age group.
