Victoria Road Saltaire

These pages provide information about the Council's public realm improvement scheme for Victoria Road due to start early January 2015.

A public consultation exercise was held in 2014 and the documents can be found at the bottom of this page.

Victoria Road Scheme update - November 2015

Work has progressed well throughout the summer on repairing and renewing all the pavements on Victoria Road. Historic details such as ‘fan ends’ have been completed to a high level of quality. Directional and interpretation signage for people finding their way around Saltaire has started to be installed and this will be completed when the pavements are finished. New robust bins will be fixed into position soon.

Work has proceeded well on Victoria Hall gardens and paved forecourt. The lions have also been lit and testing is ongoing. They should be making an exciting impact on dark evenings shortly. Trees will be planted in these and the Salt Building gardens shortly.

Alexandra Square, the gardens owned by Incommunities in front of the Almshouses, has also had improvement works this summer. The boundary wall has been straightened out and some new stone inserted. Trees, spring bulbs and a beech hedge have all been planted.

Work on the new pavements will continue above Saltaire Road early in the New Year. The programme may be subject to variations, especially due to inclement weather and these will be notified as appropriate.

Access to the pavements, highway and parking bays will be managed to minimise disruption and the area will be barriered off for safety. Pedestrians may need to use pavements on the other side of the Road from time to time. Access to front doors will be maintained at all times.

Victoria Road Scheme update - May 2015

Work will commence this month on repairing and renewing all the pavements. The old York stone pavements below the railway will be repaired as necessary. The work above the railway will involve excavating old concrete pavement flags and constructing new foundations. Locally sourced, new York stone will be laid and mortared in. Wherever possible the old kerb stones will be retained. Details such as fan ends and cellar light surrounds may require the cutting of flags to size on site.

Work on the new pavements is to start on the west side of the Road above Albert Terrace and progressing up the Road to Saltaire Road and then to move over to the east side and working down. Work above Saltaire Road will commence in the Autumn. However the programme may be subject to variations and these will be notified as appropriate.

Access to the pavements, highway and parking bays will be managed to minimise disruption and the area will be barriered off for safety. Pedestrians may need to use pavements on the other side of the Road from time to time. Access to front doors will be maintained at all times.

Victoria Road Scheme update - April 2015

Work will commence in the week of 20th April replacing all the old lamp posts with the new ones and will take several weeks. The work will involve disconnecting the old columns, taking them away and reconnecting the new ones. To maintain light on the Road at all times there may be an overlap when some old poles remain in place awaiting the connection of new poles.

Access to the footpath, highway and parking bays will be managed to minimise disruption and the area coned off for safety each day. Access to front doors will be maintained at all times. To see a picture of the new lighting column please see the Victoria Road Saltaire Scheme Drawing (PDF)

Victoria Road Scheme update - March 2015

The 8 new trees have now been planted outside the Almshouses - they are cherry trees and field maples. The tarmac pavement surface is a temporary one, pending the repair of the low wall to Alexandra Square gardens. This length of pavement will be finished with new Yorkstone flags and reused kerbs later in the year.
