Social Services and a number of voluntary organisations work with families where a member is HIV positive to deal with any immediate problems, and to help the family plan for the long term care of children.

Terrance Higgins Trust

The Terrance Higgins Trust has a range of information and services for you. From publications with helpful tips on taking medication, to counselling and advice services.

The Terrance Higgins Trust offers a very wide range of support services, including:

  • Emotional support and information by phone 
  • Help with accessing HIV testing and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) treatment 
  • Advice about your rights in benefits, employment, immigration and housing 
  • Treatment advice 
  • Contact with support groups 
  • Help with accessing grants, respite and complementary therapies 
  • Education for the community about HIV and sexually transmitted infections 
  • Legal advice for those living with HIV 
  • Written information and leaflets 
  • Counselling.

The Terrence Higgins Trust

Children with Aids Charity (CWAC)

Children with AIDS Charity (CWAC) are a registered national charity. It has become a key player in the development and provision of services specifically for the growing number of children in the UK living with HIV and AIDS.

The charity provides assistance in the following areas:

  • Provides Family Assistance through funding, a hardship Fund, Holiday Fund, Respite Breaks Fund. 
  • Provides an Educational Programme and Resource Centre. 
  • Awareness through children’s booklets videos, leaflets, and workshops.

Barnardo's Positive Options

Barnardo's Planning Scheme offers the opportunity to plan for the future of children's care, of parents who are HIV positive or living with other life threatening illnesses. The scheme explores options such as fostering, care by friends and relatives or adoption and giving high priority to the wishes of the child.



Grandma's is a church based organisation which aims to provide practical help to children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.
