Waste management plan

Members of Bradford Council’s Executive are being asked to approve a strategy for dealing with the district’s waste for the next 10 to 20 years.

Following endorsement by an independent Planning Inspector, Bradford Council is now ready to adopt The Waste Management District Plan Document (DPD).

The DPD sets out a broad vision for the future of waste management for the district and the objectives for sustainable management of waste.

The Council is committed to producing the DPD which will identify sites for waste management and policies for their delivery and implementation in support of the approach set out in national and regional planning guidance as well as the Local Plan Core Strategy.

It is estimated that by 2030, the Bradford district will have to deal with a staggering total of 1,681,962 tonnes of waste.

This includes all waste collected by the local authority, industrial and commercial waste, hazardous waste, demolition, excavation, construction and agricultural waste.

Following public consultations the DPD was examined by a Government Planning Inspector who has now delivered his final report.

He has ruled that the plan can be considered essentially sound and legally compliant, subject to some modifications.

This means that the DPD can now be formerly adopted by the Executive when it meets at City Hall on 12 September. Final adoption will be by Full Council.

The DPD will form part of Bradford’s broader Local Plan which is the blueprint for all development within the Bradford district up to 2030.

Bradford Council Executive Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, Coun Alex Ross-Shaw said: “Bradford needs to take responsibility for the waste it produces, with a more sustainable policy of management.

“Bradford will continue to produce more waste – therefore we need to plan how we’re going to deal with it effectively – this document will help us do that – it means we can ensure more sustainable and effective waste management for the future.

“Using the DPD as a guide, we will put in place structures and systems to enable us to manage the waste we generate by promoting a wide range of technologies and cross-boundary working where it is needed.

“Waste management is a massive responsibility for the local authority and we are sure that this document will help us discharge that responsibility in the best way possible.”
