Waste management contract

The decision to deal with the Bradford district’s waste for up to the next 15 years will be put before the Council’s Executive next week.

A contract to deal with the waste has been agreed between the local authority and the company Associated Waste Management (AWM).

The contract, for 12 years with an additional three-year option at the end, will be formally signed at City Hall on Thursday, 21 September.

According to a report to the Executive, AWM was chosen as the preferred bidder for the contract following the outcome of a detailed analysis and evaluation process.

It will see Bradford’s 150,000 tonnes per year of residual waste treated mainly at a newly commissioned waste treatment facility in south Leeds.

This will produce additional recyclables as part of preparing the waste for thermal treatment to generate electricity at SSEs new multifuel energy facility currently under development at their Ferrybridge site close to the M62/A1 junction.

Energy generated from Bradford’s residual waste will be fed into the power grid, which could be enough to power around 28,000 homes.

The process will offer a more sustainable alternative to depositing household waste in landfill sites which is expensive and harmful to the environment. Under the contract, more than 90 per cent of Bradford’s waste will be diverted from landfill.

Coun Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Environment and Sport, said:

“This has been a long and complicated process but we were determined to make the right choice for the people of Bradford and for the environment.

“The process will lead to an increase in recycling rates as well as a high level of diversion from landfill.”

The Executive, which meets at City Hall on 12 September, is being asked to note the report.
