The next phase of further preparatory works for Bradford’s Transforming Cities Fund improvements in the city centre are set to get underway along Wakefield Road.

These preparatory works will take place over the next two weekends to help alleviate congestion caused whilst a series of junction upgrades are constructed around the city core as part of the main Transforming Cities Fund project alongside the delivery of the district heat network and One City Park.

The work includes the temporary removal of the segregated cycleway on Wakefield Road between the Dudley Hill Roundabout and Croft Street.

One lane of Wakefield Road inbound between the Dudley Hill Roundabout and Croft Street will be close between 9.30am and 3.30pm on Friday 21 July to remove road-markings. There will then be a full closure on the same stretch from 8pm on Friday 21 July to 5am on Saturday 22 July and also from 8pm on Saturday 22 July to 5am on Sunday 23 July to remove infrastructure.

The following weekend will involve work to the outbound section of Wakefield Road from Croft Street to the Dudley Hill Roundabout. One lane will be close between 9.30am and 3.30pm on Tuesday 25 July to remove road-markings and a full road closure will be in place on the same stretch between 8pm on Friday 28 July and 5am Saturday 29 July and from 8pm on Saturday 29 July until 5am on Sunday 30 July for the removal of infrastructure.

Suitable signed diversions will be in place during the road closures and buses will diverted.

Once the construction of the city centre improvements under the Transforming Cities Fund programme are completed, a permanent segregated cycleway alongside bus improvements including dedicated bus lanes will be provided on Wakefield Road, funded by the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said: “The major programme of works being undertaken as part of the Transforming Cities Fund project, will see the largest transformation of the city centre in decades. We recognise that this work will cause disruption to those using the roads in and around the city centre. The work being carried out on Wakefield Road aims to help to alleviate some of that disruption to traffic by increasing capacity. Signs warning people about the roadworks are already up and people are asked to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.”
