Industrial Services Group

In a world of public finance austerity and stiff commercial competition, one Bradford business helping to support disabled people has shown it can punch above its weight.

The Industrial Services Group (ISG) - with factories in Frizinghall and Great Horton - will produce Christmas and other festival lights for more than 50 local authorities this year. As well as its festive lights, ISG also produces windows and doors for a number of high profile social housing and construction customers.

The Frizinghall site has been home to workplaces for the disabled for almost 100 years. ISG’s origins date back to 1920 when construction of its first building was commissioned by the Bradford Royal Institute for the Blind, supporting disabled people to work, many of whom were injured First World War veterans.

ISG operates a commercial business wholly-owned by Bradford Council and employs 45 staff, two-thirds of whom are disabled.

Because of Government cuts, the business can’t rely on financial help from the local authority and has had to battle to achieve financial viability.

With a combination of customer satisfaction, coherent marketing strategies and industrial efficiency, ISG has put itself on a sound financial footing, breaking free of local authority hand-outs.

And in its latest achievement, the group appears in the 2017 edition of the prestigious Parliamentary Review as an example of good practice in the manufacturing sector.

Coun Imran Khan, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Education, Employment and Skills, said: “As well as its commercial aspirations, the business has a strong social purpose as it seeks to recruit disadvantaged long-term unemployed people across all areas of its work.

“The team prides itself on the quality of work, which is necessary to succeed in a commercial business environment, but the social aspect of the work is its proudest achievement.

“We hope that it can remain on a solid commercial footing and continue to continue its good work for many years to come.”
