Government urged to share wealth

Partners in Bradford’s Producer City Board have responded to the government’s Industrial Strategy consultation on how best to grow the nation’s economy.

Bradford Council and partners have welcomed the Government's commitment to drafting an Industrial Strategy and highlighted the ways in which it could realise the potential of northern cities like Bradford.

Bradford Council has stressed the importance of investing in infrastructure. For Bradford this means a city centre stop on a new Northern Powerhouse rail line.

The Bradford response also suggests that the Government’s strategy does not put enough emphasis on the role of a good education in growing the economy. It highlights the value of initiatives like Bradford Pathways and our Industrial Centres of Excellence in linking education and skills to real job opportunities.

Rebalancing investment across the country in order to help spread the wealth is also important. Growth should not be concentrated in the South East. Instead Government should make an effort to invest in places with potential across the UK.

Bradford Council leader, Coun Susan Hinchcliffe said: “I welcome the fact that government is thinking about what actions will best help support industrial growth.

"With a large, young working-age population,  Bradford has amazing potential to contribute further to the nation’s economy. With the right input into actions that support the economic growth locally, we can prosper."

Following this response to Government, partners in Bradford will focus on how they can work together in the district to update their approach to supporting the district’s economy.

A new economic growth strategy is being worked on by the Producer City Board and will be developed by Summer 2017.
