Items belonging to a former Lord Mayor of Bradford will be returned to the city to go on display in City Hall.

The artefacts belonging to Alderman Joseph Hayhurst, Lord Mayor of Bradford 1918-19, will be presented to the current Lord Mayor, Coun Abid Hussain by Mrs Carolyn Robinson and her mother-in-law Barbara Robinson on Thursday 5 October.

The items were found in a box of personal effects belonging to Carolyn’s father-in-law, Edgar Robinson who was the Lord Mayor of Bradford in 1960-61.

Alderman Joseph Hayhurst, Bradford’s first Labour Lord Mayor, was elected to Civic Office on 9 November 1918, only two days before the end of the First World War.

Sadly he was already gravely ill at the time of his installation as Civic head on exactly the 25th anniversary of him entering the City Council (as it was then).

He spent almost all of his short period in office on his sickbed and died in office on 13 June 1919. His deputy Walter Barber succeeded him as Lord Mayor and served out the remaining months of his term.

The items include an inscribed silver salver from the Advisory Committee members of the Lady Mayoress’ War Guild, presented in June 1919 and a pair of framed silver photographs of Hayhurst and his wife the Lady Mayoress. The frames are engraved “Presented by the Bradford City Justices, to Mrs Joseph Hayhurst, as a mark of respect and esteem, and in recognition of her late husband’s services as chief magistrate, 9 November 1918 to 13 June 1919.”

The items also include three inscribed ceremonial keys in leather presentation boxes and assorted medals and inscribed tokens.

The items will be gifted to the city of Bradford and will go on display in City Hall.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Coun Abid Hussain, said: “I’m looking forward to meeting Carolyn and Barbara and finding out about the fascinating items from our city’s history that they have discovered. I will be interested to see these objects and to have them return to the city to go on display.”
