Double win for Bradford in national awards

Bradford Council staff scooped two prestigious awards in the Public Services People Managers Association (PPMA) awards on 27 April 2017.

The PPMA is an organisation promoting high quality, passionate, committed and diverse public service.

Sue Dunkley, Director of Human Resources at Bradford Council won the award for Public Sector HR Director of the Year.

At the same ceremony, Bradford Council and Collingwood Learning Solutions Ltd won the award for most effective partnership for their collaborative work on Real Safeguarding Stories.

Real Safeguarding Stories is a series of videos used to train and educate people on safeguarding including domestic abuse and child sexual exploitation.

The initiative began in 2015, as part of a Bradford training event for Councillors. Collingwood interviewed three survivors of domestic abuse. These became three tremendously powerful monologues, delivered by actors, used for the training event. The project has grown and is now a bank of over 20 video monologues.

In the Bradford District, Real Safeguarding Stories has been used for training with taxi drivers and with staff who work to prevent CSE. Bradford College also use the videos as part of the student awareness programme and it is also used in some children's residential homes.

Other local authorities such as City of York, Doncaster Council and Sheffield Council have used the videos to train staff.

The videos can be found on http://realsafeguardingstories.com/.

Christopher Farquhar, member development manager, said: “It’s an amazing honour to receive this award along with Collingwood Learning Solutions. It has been a fantastic collaboration which has a really serious purpose. It shows that we are doing some really innovative work in Bradford to raise awareness of domestic abuse and child sexual exploitation. The safeguarding stories are a great resource that are free for anyone to use.”

Sue Dunkley, Bradford Council’s director of human resources, said: “I am totally humbled just to be nominated. I say all the time that we have some of the best staff that I have ever had the honour to work with and all I do is give them the opportunity to thrive. This is a great award for #teamBradford.”
