A business support initiative in Bradford city centre has been highly commended in the prestigious Enterprising Britain Awards, narrowly missing out on first spot.

The Bradford City Centre Growth Scheme, which so far has created almost 600 full time equivalent jobs and supported 221 businesses was entered in to the “Improving the Business Environment” category.

Applicants were invited to show how they had made a significant and positive change in their approach towards supporting and promoting enterprise in the last two years.

The five categories that the judges evaluated against were Originality; Impact on the local or wider economy; Improvement of local stakeholder relations; Transferability and Impact on business growth and scale up.

Coun Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transportation, said “To secure this commendation shows the significant amount of business support and investment that has gone in to the city centre via Bradford Council's Growth Scheme in the past few years.

"Many businesses have received support via capital grants for building works and equipment purchases as well as business rates rebates, allowing them to open a new venture or expand their business and take on more staff which has further benefited the wider city centre economy."

All category winners and projects who have been awarded a judges Highly Commended Certificate will be invited to an awards presentation in London.

The City of Hull has been named the most Enterprising Place in Britain in recognition of their successful four year programme helping local businesses to start-up and grow and getting 6,800 people into jobs focusing on economically excluded groups.

The Enterprising Britain Awards are part of the Government’s drive to support entrepreneurial activity in the UK.

Managed by Investment in Young People on behalf of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the awards celebrate the work of public sector and government-backed organisations that support and encourage entrepreneurialism across the UK.
