Bradford’s Youth Orchestra in full swing for summer

Bradford’s Youth Orchestra will be performing in a number of high profile concerts this summer, including workshop sessions for some young people with world renowned violinist Nicola Benedetti, and concerts in Birmingham and at the Bradford Festival.

The Youth Orchestra, which is run by Bradford Council’s Music and Arts Service, and features performers from both primary and secondary schools across the district, will feature in four main events. The events are:

Nicola Benedetti workshop and concert at Leeds Town Hall on 4 July

Members of the Bradford Youth Orchestra will take part in a day’s workshop with Nicola Benedetti, one of the world’s finest and most in-demand young violinists. This is a rare opportunity for young people from Bradford to work with one of the world’s most prestigious violinists.

The day will consist of string orchestra rehearsals, where Nicola will share technical knowledge as well as rehearsing pieces with the string orchestra. The day will end with a short concert at 7pm where the orchestra will show what they have achieved during the workshops, as well as performances from Nicola Benedetti, David Le Page and Robin Michael who are also leading parts of the day. Tickets and details for the concert are available at https://estastrings.org.uk/product/nicola-benedetti-july-4-leeds/

Music for Youth National Festival - Symphony Hall, Birmingham on 7 July

The Youth Orchestra and Bradford Academy Choir have been invited to perform at the Music for Youth National Festival at the Birmingham Symphony Hall following their successful participation in the Youth Regional Festival in Kirklees in March.

Their performance of the ‘The American Dream’ at the regional festival was done in collaboration with Bradford Academy Choir. Their interpretation of American themed music including Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, the traditional Shenandoah, and An American Trilogy, originally popularised by Elvis Presley so impressed the judges that the orchestra and choir were invited to take part in the national festival. Details about the Festival can be found at http://www.mfy.org.uk/events/national-festival/

Bradford Festival - Centenary Square, Bradford on 13 July at 6pm

As part of the Schools’ Day of the Bradford Festival, the Youth Orchestra is collaborating with Hip Hop Soul group Normanton Street to provide an orchestral backing for five of their tracks. This is a new development for the orchestra and a rare opportunity to mix two very different musical styles. More details about the band at https://www.normantonstreet.com/about

Youth Orchestra Tour to La Rochelle, France from 25 to 29 July

The orchestra tours abroad bi-annually and previous destinations have included Austria, Italy, and Poland with concerts always being well attended and well received. This year, the orchestra heads for La Rochelle in France where they will perform three concerts during their stay, all in outdoor locations.

Coun Imran Khan, Bradford Council’s Portfolio Holder for Education, Employment and Skills, said:

“Bradford’s Youth Orchestra goes from strength to strength. The programme they are involved in over the summer will provide them with a fantastic experience which will enrich their whole education, as well as bring enjoyment to hundreds of people. Great credit must go to all the young people and the teachers, staff and parents who support them for their hard work and commitment.”
