The David Hockney Gallery at Bradford’s Cartwright Hall Art Gallery was highly commended at the prestigious Museums + Heritage Awards ceremony last night.

The Bradford Council art gallery was Highly Commended in the Permanent Exhibition Award, which recognises excellence in the creation of a new museum, redevelopment of an existing one or a new permanent exhibition.

The innovative David Hockney Gallery transformed Cartwright Hall’s largest space into a vibrant, inspirational permanent display dedicated to the life and work of the Bradford-born artist.

Hockney was inspired by Bradford’s public art collection. He reflected that, when a young man, “Cartwright Hall was the only place in Bradford you could see real paintings”.

The gallery uniquely combines Hockney’s original artworks with a personal narrative, linking his life and art to his local roots.

The David Hockney Gallery has acted as a regenerative catalyst for the venue, boosting visitor numbers, increasing donations and shop sales, and attracting new partnerships.

The Cartwright Hall Art Gallery was jointly Highly Commended with the Natural History Museum in London, just behind the winners the Brooklands Museum. Also in the category was Bradford's National Science and Media Museum as well as the National Army Museum, The Postal Museum and Ashmolean Museum.

The Museums + Heritage Award ceremony, which took place last night in London, highlights excellence, innovative and ground-breaking initiatives from galleries and visitor attractions across the UK and overseas.

The awards were judged by a panel of the museum sector’s leading lights including, Diane Lees, Director General, Imperial War Museum; Bernard Donoghue, Director, Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) and other leading sector professionals.

Coun Sarah Ferriby, Executive Member for Environment, Sport and Culture, said: “We are delighted that our David Hockney Gallery has been recognised in this way at this prestigious awards ceremony.

“Our Cartwright Hall Art Gallery staff have worked so hard on the exhibition and we are rightly proud of it."
