Bradford Council’s Corporate Fraud team wins excellence award

Bradford Council’s Corporate Fraud Team is celebrating a major win this week.

At the Institute of Revenues, Rating and Valuation (IRRV) annual conference, the Council’s Corporate Fraud team triumphed over five other shortlisted teams to scoop the 'Excellence in Counter Fraud' award 2017.

The awards panel, who visited the team on site in September, were looking for organisations who demonstrated that they had excelled in the area of 'counter fraud'.

Counter fraud is the term used for combating all types of fraud and corruption. The Council's counter fraud strategy is designed to support an anti-fraud culture and minimise the impact of fraud on the residents of the District.

The panel came to Bradford to meet the team, where they were given a presentation and also met with Tracey Banfield the Service Manager and Bradford Council’s Chief Executive, Kersten England.

Kersten said: “It was a great pleasure to speak to the panel and have the opportunity to showcase the excellent work of our counter fraud team.

“I am delighted that we have received this award in recognition of our robust systems and the vision and hard work of the team. We are increasingly showing that Bradford is leading the way in a wide range of arenas. It’s fantastic to see our confidence and expertise shining through.”

Over the last two years, the team has carried out over 1,000 investigations, recovered 20 registered social landlord properties and applied 271 prosecutions and sanctions.

Some of the most common types of fraud the team deals with include: people and/or businesses providing false information to claim allowances, benefits, discounts or grants, disabled persons parking 'blue badge' misuse and social tenancy housing fraud (for example, illegal subletting).

The other teams nominated for the award were from Bedford Borough Council, Broadland District Council, City of Edinburgh Council, Oxford City Council and Veritau Ltd.
