Below is the information on the Sports Investment Plan which formed the basis of the consultation

What is the consultation about?

Delivering Sustainable Modern Leisure Centres

The Council are looking to deliver four new leisure centres across the district representing Bradford’s largest ever investment in sports facilities.

Buildings get older and eventually need replacing. The Council will be engaging with the public on the plans for the new leisure centres and will be providing opportunities for residents to find out further information at a series of open events. In addition, a number of permanent exhibitions providing further information will be taking place from 25 August to 21 September 2014.

The need for change

A number of Bradford’s existing leisure centres are coming to the end of their life-span and are considered no longer fit-for purpose. Due to rising running and maintenance costs, some of the District’s leisure centres now represent a financial burden to the Council.

The proposed new leisure centres

In order to meet this challenge the Council proposes to provide four new exciting modern leisure centres that will encourage even more people to take up physical activity.

By building these new modern leisure facilities the Council can also significantly reduce running costs as well as delivering a greatly improved customer experience.

The new sports facilities will be located to better serve Bradford’s residents and have been informed by detailed demand assessments. Every community should be within a reasonable reach of a leisure centre.

The Council has already made a commitment that new facilities will open before four older facilities close. After the new facilities open the outdated and inefficient centres at Bowling Pool, Richard Dunn Sports Centre, Queensbury Pool and Bingley Pool would close. The sale of these sites will help to pay for the new facilities.
