What's in a name or number? Ask the postee or any of the emergency services. Can you imagine streets with no names and buildings without numbers?
Street naming and numbering can be highly sensitive and emotive issues, particularly, when it becomes necessary to make changes. Streets are named and buildings numbered when they are first constructed and then from time to time to accommodate infill development. Making changes is never taken lightly because of the inconvenience it can cause. Consultation is the key every time.
Street naming is a valuable means of acknowledging the past, recognising the present and envisaging the future and also paying tribute to those who have given distinguished service to the community or have contributed to the local heritage. The following legislation has been adopted for street naming and numbering; Towns Improvement Clauses Act 1847, sections 64 and 65 and the Public Health Acts Amendment Act 1907, section 21.
