Commuting Patterns

Analysis of the Census 2001 workplace statistics reveals that:

  • 149,782 people live and work in Bradford (77% of the workers in Bradford also live in Bradford).
  • 41,468 people live in Bradford but commute out of the District to work (23% of those in employment).
  • 44,895 people live outside Bradford but commute into the District to work.
  • There is a net flow of around 3,400 commuters into Bradford each day.
  • Leeds is the top destination for commuters out of Bradford - 51% of people commuting out of Bradford work in Leeds. A further 25% work in other West Yorkshire Districts, and 8% work in Craven to the north-west of the District.
  • 33% of the commuters into Bradford come from Leeds, and 39% from other West Yorkshire districts. 9% of in-commuters live in Craven.
  • There is a net inward flow of commuters into Bradford from all surrounding Districts except Leeds, which receives a net gain of 6,000 Bradford commuters.
