Waste - A Sustainable Future

Waste - A Sustainable Future

Bradford Council is seeking to significantly improve the sustainability of its waste management service.

In the Government’s Waste Strategy for England 2007, local authorities were called upon to improve their waste management by meeting a number of targets aimed at boosting recycling, composting and value recovery from waste. In turn, substantially reducing reliance on landfill and greenhouse gases produced from our waste.

Householders in the Bradford district produce around 220,000 tonnes of waste every year of which approximately 27% is recycled and composted, so the majority ends up in landfill sites.

The Council must therefore consider other waste management options and invest in a waste treatment solution as an alternative to landfill in order to avoid heavy penalties from the Government and to lessen the impact of our waste disposal on the environment.
