Abandoned Vehicles

Definition: A vehicle that has no current registered keeper.

  • The first point of contact when reporting an abandoned vehicle is the local Police station, details of which appear in the Contact Us section. If the Police are unable to be contacted, or a customer rings the Council first, the Abandoned Vehicle Section will be happy to take the vehicle details and contact the Police.
  • The Police will undertake the relevant checks on the vehicle such as registered keeper, tax, insurance, MOT etc. This information is investigated on the Police's PNC computer system.
  • If the vehicle does not have a current registered keeper, the Police will send the details of the vehicle (make, model, location) to Bradford Council.
  • On receipt of notification from the police, the Abandoned Vehicle Inspector will visit the site and make arrangements for the vehicle to be removed.
  • The Council’s appointed Contractor will then remove the vehicle.
Note – vehicles are recovered within 48 hours upon notification by the Police in point (4) above.
  • The vehicle will be stored by the contractor for a minimum of 7 days, following this time the vehicle will be disposed of appropriately.
  • Any person wishing to claim a recovered vehicle must contact West Yorkshire Police, who will present them with a release notice, which the "owner" will take to the Council's contractor to reclaim their vehicle, upon which they will be charged.
