EMAS (Eco management and Audit scheme)

City of Bradford M.D.C is committed to improving the local environment and helping to protect it for the future. We recognise that are wide range of activities and services have a positive and negative impacts upon the environment and that we have a leading role to play in creating a sustainable city.

To achieve this goal an Environmental policy is in place. We are also in the process of implementing Eco management and Audit scheme (EMAS), an independently verified environmental management system across all services to ensure that we identify all our environmental impacts, comply with environmental performance. We will also report to the public on our environmental performances.

By introducing EMAS we will aim to:

  • Reduce our energy use
  • Reduce our water use
  • Reduce our transport impacts
  • Reduce the impact of waste from households and our activities
  • Enhance and protect Wildlife
  • Prevent pollution from hazardous materials
  • Minimise the impacts of goods and services we buy
  • Deliver our environmental
  • Communicate with staff, the public and others

Why EMAS for Bradford?

The council believes that the Eco management and the Audit scheme provides the most comprehensive means of making sure we manage the environment in a rigorous and consistent way. As well as providing a sound framework for Council officers and members to use.

What EMAS will deliver internally do for the Council internally?

  • Ensure that the Council goes beyond legal compliance
  • Encourage active employee involvement
  • Practice honest and true communication
  • Aim for continues improvement in environmental performance ,through the EMAS implementation process.
  • Ensure a high level of environment production
  • Enables the Council to publicise its progress through the publication of an environmental statement which reflects all their efforts

What are we doing?

EMAS is being promoted throughout the authority via the EMAS Project Team.

Is the whole Council going through the EMAS process at the same time?

EMAS is currently being promoted throughout the whole authority via the EMAS Project team but to make the process more manageable within the resources available, a phased approach to EMAS implementation has been adopted.

The office of Regeneration and Environment will be the first to go through the EMAS process.

The lessons learned from the implementing EMAS within this office will be cascaded to the other offices via the EMAS Project Team.
