Why Produce The Register?
The role of English Heritage:
English Heritage’s register for listed buildings at risk is published annually bringing together information of all the nation’s Grade I and Grade II* along with scheduled monuments known to be ‘at risk’. This enables a record to be kept of the condition of the buildings and for prioritised action to be taken where necessary, along with fulfilling their primary role to provide practical advice and resources to owners to secure the future of these important buildings at risk.
The role of the Local Authority:
The Council are the primary custodians for listed buildings within the local area acting as a steward, as part of this role are required to periodically survey all listed buildings within the district and keep regular updates on those ‘at risk’.
Unlike English Heritage, the Council survey all listed buildings from Grade I to Grade II and compile a Listed Building At Risk register for the district. This enables the authority to prioritise action that may be needed with any of the buildings using a variety of methods such as grant-aid, legal action or providing advise on building issues.
The role of the public:
Information obtained by the council is available to the public via this site and also by contacting the Conservation Team. Members of the public can keep a watchful eye on our historic environment and are encouraged to notify the council if any changes occur to the state of any listed buildings or structures.
