Success stories

Wilsden Independent Chapel, Wilsden

Grade II

The former Wesleyan Sunday School, dated 1890 became unused and derelict in recent years and became classified as being ‘at risk’ in the survey of 1992. Since then, a sensitive scheme has been designed using appropriate materials to renovate the building for residential use. The transformation is sympathetic to the character and nature of the building.

New Mill, Saltaire

Grade II

In 1986, New Mill had stood empty for a number of years and did not appear to have any prospects for the future. The mill was extensively refurbished in 1992/3 and was one of the first mill conversions in the Bradford District. Good design and materials have ensured a sustainable future for this building, which is now a mix of privately, owned apartments and office space. The completed scheme contributes substantially to the character of the World Heritage Site at Saltaire.

Manningham Mills, Heaton, Bradford

Grade II*

Manningham Mills is one of the largest textile mills in Yorkshire, in its later years specialising in velvets. The mill closed as an economic concern in the early 1990’s and presented a problem in terms of its future partly due to its vast scale and the cost of repairs and conversion. As demand for residential accommodation in historic buildings became popular in the early 21st century, the private sector saw an opportunity to develop Manningham Mills, which are now private apartments.

Raikes Head Cottage, Silsden

Grade II

Listed in 1965, this former labourer’s cottage became at risk in 1994. The cottage was in a very poor state of repair, the walls were in a bad condition and the roof was near collapse. The owners of this working farm have undertaken a renovation scheme to bring this property back into viable residential use. The end result has been very pleasing; the works carried out by a local stonemason have been completed to a high standard, which has been in character with the property, portrays good use of materials and careful attention to detail.
