Repairs and Maintenance Guidance

Many owners of houses and other buildings in the District’s conservation areas wanted to know how the way they maintain, repair and restore their own properties can help to maintain or enhance the special character of their conservation area.

The Design and Conservation Team has responded by producing a Repairs and Maintenance Guide for traditional buildings. The guide advices on things like roof maintenance and repair, repointing walls and fitting burglar alarms. The guidance is applicable across the district and is divided into brief sections which can be accessed via the links below.

The guidance is designed to be downloaded either as a single document, or individual topics (such as stone roofs or boundary walls) can be downloaded individually for ease of reference.

We hope that homeowners and the owners of other historic buildings find the information in the guidance helpful. If you have any comments on the Repairs and Maintenance Guidance, please complete a comments form using the link below.
