Farmers are facing many challenges following BSE, foot & mouth disease and the reform of the European Agricultural Policy. In response many farmers are looking at new ways of generating income by diversifying into alternative enterprises outside of their mainstream agricultural activities.

The aim of this advice note is to provide general information and advice to farmers and other landowners thinking of diversifying the economic activity on their farms and also to encourage positive communication between farmers and the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council in order to promote successful diversification schemes.

Although farm diversification may not be practicable for every farmer, well-planned and reasoned projects can create additional sources of income in order to help sustain their existing business and at the same time enhance the range of facilities available in our rural areas.
