Energy and Environmental Management for Schools

Welcome to the Energy and Environmental Management for schools event resource page hosted by the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council Energy Management Unit.

Whilst the Council is able to develop and implement corporate strategies and policies on environmental issues, it is sometimes difficult to engage schools in the same processes, as "local management" tends to take priority.

However, for the following reasons, schools should not be overlooked:

  • Schools account for 57% of the Council’s expenditure on energy.
  • Significant energy and water efficiency savings (10-20%) can come from little or no investment – this means more money available for raising attainment.
  • Research consistently confirms that young people are very concerned about the environment and climate change.
  • Good practice should be shared and built on.
  • There are increasing pressures and targets for schools to meet, e.g., sustainability "doorways", travel plans and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.
  • Commitment to tackling Climate Change needs to be demonstrated and the right messages communicated.

So, on 7th November 2007, the Council’s Energy Management Unit hosted an all-day event – Energy & Environmental Management for Schools – at Flockton House. The event provided schools with an update on changing energy and environmental issues, featured practical help and management advice in these areas and demonstrated how the whole school could become engaged in such activities.

The event was rounded off by Haworth Primary School sharing their experiences of achieving an Eco-Schools first flag award, and describing the team work and community support that had developed along the way.

Details and presentations of the Energy & Environmental Management for Schools event, described as "Brilliant" by several attendees, can be found on the following pages.

In view of the very positive feedback received, it is aimed to hold a repeat event early in the new year.

The Eco-Schools scheme is strongly recommended to schools as it supports the Council’s overall environmental objectives, but ensures that local management is not undermined.
