The City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council Environment Policy

The City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council is committed to protecting and enhancing the environment both locally and globally.

In this respect it will make every effort to:

  1. Encourage the reduced consumption of natural resources and energy.
  2. Operate a Purchasing Policy that avoids the use of environmentally damaging products, packaging and services, and encourages the use of recycled materials.

  3. Prevent environmental pollution arising from its own operations and use its powers to minimise the impact of others within the District.

  4. Balance the need to enhance the built environment with measures that reduce the environmental impact of development.
  5. Promote a balanced transport policy

  6. Safeguard natural habitats and species and preserve the nature and character of the district

  7. Reduce the volume of waste generated both by the Council and within the District where practicable.

  8. Provide information and support to both the public and staff to encourage interest in environmental matters.

  9. Support the objectives of the District Environmental Strategy developed by the District Environmental Partnership to support Bradford District 2020 Vision and Bradford District.

In order to achieve this, the Council will implement the European Community Eco-Management and Auditing Scheme (EMAS).

Eco Management and Auditing Scheme will:

  • Apply to all activities undertaken by the Council, including contracted out services as new contracts are negotiated.
  • Comply with and where practicable exceed the requirements of relevant environmental legislation.
  • Set objectives and implement action programmes in order to minimise the negative environmental effects and increase the positive effects of the Council's activities.
  • Strive to achieve continuous improvements in environmental performance
  • Publish, at appropriate intervals, a Statement of the Council's environmental performance.
  • Include mechanisms for consultation with both external partners and the public.
