New Look for Bradford’s Shopping District
A programme of improvements to revitalise the retail heart of Bradford city centre is now underway.
Work on Darley Street will see the creation of a more attractive and safer pedestrian environment. The street surface will be repaved using natural stone materials and there will be new lighting, contemporary street furniture and trees, programmed for completion before the Christmas lights switch-on in mid-November 2007.
This is the first phase of a series of streetscape improvements planned for the city centre by Bradford Council and Bradford Centre Regeneration. Kirkgate will be repaved in 2008 and as part of this, a water feature at the Darley Street junction will also be built.
The Council has recently appointed Birse Civils Ltd. of Tadcaster to carry out these works. The contractor has extensive experience of town and city centre streetscape refurbishment works, including Briggate in Leeds within the last two years and the recently completed Darlington Pedestrian Heart scheme.
The Council and contractor will be working as a partnership and one of the main aims is to ensure that the impact of the works on trading is kept to a minimum. The quality of the finished work is also of importance and with several streets being repaved by the same team, there will be consistent workmanship.
