The Birth of a New City

About the District

Introduction

“Bradford has become a model for city regeneration. Already a manufacturing powerhouse, the city’s manufacturing base has become even stronger, recording a rise of 2.8% employment in the sector compared to a national fall of 5.2%. Regeneration has also sparked diversification of the city’s economy. The service sector is now a formidable force with IT, financial services and environmental technologies spearheading the growth. The city’s regeneration is predicted to deliver an extra 6,000 new jobs in the city, 2,000 of which will be graduate positions. And over the next few years, £2 billion of construction work will further transform the city region. That includes a £300 million redevelopment of the Broadway retail and leisure centre. Indeed, so impressive is Bradford’s regeneration, that the city has been tipped by research group OMIS as one of the top six UK cities poised and equipped for future growth.”
Yorkshire Forward (RDA)

When people think about Bradford they think about the city itself, but the district is two thirds rural and has some breathtaking landscapes such as Ilkley Moor, which is home to the world famous Cow and Calf Rocks.

Five Rise Locks, Bingley
Walkers can take a stroll along the banks of the Leeds Liverpool Canal as it meanders through the Aire Valley and marvel at two magnificent pieces of engineering at Bingley’s Three and Five Rise Locks.
One of the jewels in the district’s crown is Saltaire, a World Heritage Site which includes Salt’s Mill, and home to a gallery exhibiting work from one of the city’s most famous sons, artist David Hockney.

Saltaire along with Haworth – home of the Bronte sisters – are two of the tourist magnets and with their quaint cafes and shops, are beautiful places to enjoy the natural beauty of the district.

If a bit of retail therapy is called for the district is a great place to indulge.  Shopping is really taking off in the city with the recent opening of the Rawson Quarter and work speeding ahead on the city centre’s £300 million Broadway scheme, which is due to open in 2012.

The spa town of Ilkley also boasts a fantastic range of shops as well as endless cafes and coffee houses to stop in and enjoy a breather.

Centenary Square has become a hub of activity for diners and socialites with high-quality restaurants and bars in the shadow of the magnificent City Hall and there is also a wealth of cosmopolitan restaurants and eateries throughout the district.
