** Helping you to reduce risks and protect people. Last updated on Tuesday June 16, 2009 **
Occupational Health & Safety > Occupational Safety Homepage

The drop down menu below lists several topics on which there are a number of documents. We have put these subject lists together for ease of use and to help you quickly find what you may need. It does not, however, provide an exhaustive list.

If you wish to view a full list of all safety documents on our website you should select the A-Z list. Selecting any item from the list will take you directly to that topic's information page.

If you are a Building Custodian, you will also need the safety information on the Building Custodian's Contents Page.

What We Do...

The Occupational Safety Service's role is to provide occupational safety advice to the Council. It is the job of Occupational Safety staff to promote a positive health and safety culture which aims to produce high standards of health and safety within the organisation. To do this, staff from the Occupational Safety Service:-

  • provide advice and guidance to help managers to fulfil their health and safety responsibilities
  • answer queries from staff and managers on health and safety issues
  • visit Council establishments where necessary to give advice on all aspects of new and existing health and safety policies and procedures
  • collect information on accidents and incidents to report to HSE where necessary
  • facilitate staff safety training
  • draft policies, procedures and guidance for health and safety
  • collect information and statistics and provide health and safety reports
  • interpret and advise on new legislation impacting on the working environment
  • attend meetings to advise on occupational safety issues
  • audit health and safety performance within Council services
  • In cases where there is a risk of serious personal injury, occupational safety staff also have the authority to issue internal Health and Safety Prohibition Notices
