Life in the Community

District and Diversity & Inclusion Team

A relatively new team within Neighbourhood Support Service that leads, develops and promotes consultation across the District with communities that are not geographically based and also with new and emerging communities, to ensure all have fair access to public services. Through its endeavours, the team also supports the Council’s community cohesion work.

Examples of the team’s work to date are:

Every Voice Counts – A pilot scheme that supports disabled people to participate at Neighbourhood Forums and to assist the Service in increasing accessibility to the service it provides.

Young People’s consultation in Baildon

Older People’s consultation and Forum in Keighley

Environment projects with schools and women

Consultation and events with the Filipino Communities

Equality Forum – Chaired by the Council Leader with representatives from non-geographically based communities across the District such as from the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual community. The aim of the Forum is to remove barriers from and increase equitable access to public services.

European Migrant Workers - Welcome to Bradford Directory

As a member of the multi-agency Bradford Central and Eastern European Working Group, the Diversity and Inclusion project took the lead on putting together the 'Welcome to Bradford Directory'. Small information packs were produced for the first working group consultation with migrant workers in July 2005 which highlighted a need for more comprehensive information on different areas, such as health services, education, housing and local laws. Different working group members and other organisations contributed to the information and this was collated by the Diversity and Inclusion Project. The project then obtained funding for printing and translation from the Safer Communities Partnership and the information was produced in 3 languages: English, Slovak and Polish. Please contact Amria Khatun Tel: 01274 437489 for copies. Availability of printed copies is limited but the directories are also now available in downloadable PDF format, see the links below.
